09 Mar Designer Partnership
Gold Coast-based boutique design firm, 3Beaches has joined forces with Whitehaven Motor Yachts to bring clients a myriad of décor options that will tantalise and inspire. Here, directors Niamh and Sonya reveal their credentials, challenges and scope now available for Whitehaven owners and those of us seeking inspired interiors.
What are you backgrounds before establishing your partnership?
Both Niamh and I have a background in Design. Our backgrounds differ slightly, Niamh is an Interior Designer and Property Developer and I am an Interior and Textile Designer.
What are the hallmarks of 3Beaches style?
3Beaches design and style is a reflection of our diverse Australian coastal, urban and country surroundings. We fuse natural elements, tropical patterns, organic décor and timber with contemporary design.
What do you like about interior design?
The fun part about interior design is no project is ever the same and creating unique, beautiful and functional spaces is always rewarding. Each design project brings with it a set of different requirements, needs and challenges. We enjoy working on various types of projects with a vast range of materials and colours.
The design industry is always evolving; new products emerge and trends come and go. We thrive on these changes and the opportunity to apply them to our next projects.
Do yachts differ from homes – how?
Yes. There are a couple of key differences between yachts and residential dwellings that need to be considered when specifying fixtures and finishes. Some of the most obvious differences is the amount of space allocated to the different zones, the exposure a yacht receives to the harsh outdoors, marine elements and of course the fact that it is a moving vessel.
Within our 3Beaches studio we are conscious of these differences and when choosing finishes, ensure that all materials specified are hard wearing, extremely durable and of the highest quality.
All of our 3Beaches fabrics and soft furnishings are incredibly soft yet durable, UV resistant, mould and mildew resistant and a perfect fit for yachts.
Teaming up with Whitehaven, what are the synergies between your brands/ethos?
Both companies have a philosophy of really listening to their clients and incorporating their styles and lifestyles into the product. As with each client’s vision of their ideal boat – layout, space, preferences accumulated from years of boating experience – we believe interiors should be unique to each owner. We both have a great sense of attention to detail and believe in the use of quality, high end products that are made to last.
How did the partnership come about?
The partnership between 3Beaches and Whitehaven emerged prior to the 2017 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Niamh and I were introduced to Peter Pembroke of Whitehaven through a third-party company. We were asked if we would be interested in dressing a Whitehaven Flybridge motor yacht and social space for the show and the relationship between the two companies has since grown.
What are the options/palettes you have devised for owners?
3Beaches have been busy assembling five starting points for Whitehaven clients: two coastal look palettes and three contemporary options. The coastal colour selections have a chic tropical feel with natural wood timbers, traditional navy blues, tan leathers and nautical décor throughout. The contemporary styled collections are a mix of sophistication and understated elegance and include muted cool and warm grey colours, seafoam blue-greens, textured finishes and modern furnishingS. These collections reflect the ethos of customization that Whitehaven is known for, and owners’ great delight in welcoming friends and family on board their Whitehavens. They are extremely social and take pride in the expression of their personalities in every facet of their boat.
How can they adapt them to complement/fit in with their own taste and preferences?
The colour options we have put together for clients is a great starting point. We start with a neutral colour palette that owners can infuse with their favourite pieces, reworking and building on that to create something truly unique.
How does the process work? Do you work with them on design ideas?
Once a client has decided to build with Whitehaven, they will meet with the 3Beaches team at our Mermaid Beach showroom. At this meeting, the client can take inspiration from the various palettes, and we can show them the finishes in situ along with the many other options available to them and how they would work with their existing ideas. Any design ideas the client has can be discussed at this point. The idea is to make this process a seamless, stress-free and enjoyable one.
How is your creativity inspired by living and working on the Coast?
Living in coastal surroundings yet being so close to the hustle and bustle of city life, inspiration is never hard to find. We draw on inspiration from all around us and our travels.
